About Us & Our History
PSA Halifax operates two container terminals in Halifax, Nova Scotia: Atlantic Hub and Fairview Cove. PSA International acquired the Halterm terminal in 2019 and expanded its presence in Halifax with the acquisition of Fairview Cove in 2021, bringing both terminals under PSA Halifax.
Halifax has been a leader in containerized shipping for more than five decades. The Halifax International Container Terminal (Halterm) opened in 1969 as Canada’s first common-user container terminal, followed by the opening of Fairview Cove Container Terminal in 1981. As cargo volumes grew, Halifax became a key intermodal gateway, supported by the expansion of rail services and investments in modern container handling infrastructure.
The Port of Halifax continued to establish itself as a leading North American container port, becoming the first port on the East Coast to welcome a post-Panamax container vessel in 1998. Continued investments in terminal equipment and infrastructure positioned Halifax to handle the world’s largest container ships and support growing international trade.
